Interview Guide
Below is a suggestive list of topics for the interview. For simplicity, the list assumes firsthand experience of separation. Firsthand experience is NOT mandatory to participate, and you can alter the format and topics according to the knowledge and memory available to your family.
A. Introduction of the participant and their hometown/family in North Korea
Your name, year of birth, and current place of residence
Your hometown or your family’s hometown
The name of the family member you are looking for in North Korea
Your relationship to that person
B. Memories and story of separation
Memories of the family member you were separated from
Memories of your hometown
Memories of food, home, school, community, holidays, or daily life with your family
When, where, and under what circumstances you were separated
C. Life after separation
Your life in South Korea or overseas
Your current family such as spouse, children, grandchildren, etc.
D. Video letter — addressed directly to family members (“Dear ….”)
What you want to relay directly to your family in North Korea
What you want them to know about your life
E. Closing message
Sharing emotions, whether they be longing, mourning, anger, fear, love, care, hopes, or wishes
Anything you want to say to future generations
